Q
How much does an inclusive playground cost compared to a traditional one?
A traditional playground costs about $120 per square foot, using basic equipment and wood chips. An inclusive playground costs around $250 per square foot, mainly because of:
Premium surfacing (poured rubber at about $18/sq.ft.)
Adaptive swings (around $8,000 each)
Multi-sensory play equipment
Costs also include the product specification, bill of materials (BOM), and engineering drawings with accessibility dimensions. Grants like KaBOOM!’s Inclusive Play Fund can cover up to 50% of the cost.
Q
What are examples of inclusive playground equipment?
Common accessible play equipment includes:
Adaptive swings and bucket seat swings with harnesses
Wheelchair-accessible merry-go-rounds with safety locks
Ground-level sensory panels with tactile and musical activities
Elevated play structures with ramps for cooperative play
Quiet/retreat spaces for children who need a calming break
These are usually built with galvanized steel frames, HDPE panels, and roto-molded plastic, finished with powder coating and UV-resistant, non-toxic materials for long-term durability.
Q
How do you design an ADA-compliant inclusive playground?
To meet ADA compliance (along with EN1176 and CSA standards), playgrounds must include:
60-inch-wide accessible routes for circulation
Gentle slopes (≤1:16) with handrails
Transfer stations on at least 50% of elevated structures
Safety surfacing (like poured-in-place rubber or rubber tiles) to reduce injury from falls
Enough clear floor space, turning radius, and reach range for wheelchair maneuvering
Visual contrast and non-slip surfaces for extra safety
These features make the playground safe, usable, and welcoming for everyone.
Q
What is an inclusive playground?
An inclusive playground is a play space designed with universal design principles so kids of all abilities can play together. These spaces have barrier-free access for children with physical, sensory, or cognitive disabilities. Features include ground-level play equipment, ramps leading to elevated structures, and transfer stations for wheelchair users. They also offer sensory play elements like musical instruments, tactile panels, and interactive games. For example, Morgan’s Wonderland in Texas includes a wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round and quiet retreat spaces, creating a truly multi-sensory environment.
